Relocation Tips That Save Time
When it comes to moving home, it can be time and money consuming – more so if you haven’t planned correctly. Packing tends to be the most consuming part of the process after the time spent to find properties to let or buy.
And life rolls on while you need to pack it up into boxes. So time-saving tips can help life go on, while still accomplishing things.
If you aren’t organized, you can start to process as early as you like – and you’ll still fall behind. As humans, we work better if there is a deadline in place. We will feel just the right amount of pressure from deadlines we set for ourselves to get them done. So spend some time creating a week by week plan. This will do two things for you.
- Give you a clear idea of how many weeks you need
- Give yourself deadlines to work towards
If you have plans to pack in the evenings after work, or school pick-ups, you might find you run out of tape – and you have to wait until tomorrow to finish. Before you start packing, gather as many packing materials like bubble wrap, tape, boxes, and marker pens in advance as you can. If you have hired a packing company, they will take care of this for you.
There are a few things that you will need as soon as you get into the new place. This survival box will be the first thing that you open. So try to place items that you are likely to need quickly. Here are some suggestions:
- Toilet paper
- Teabag and/or coffee
- Sanitary protection
- Hair bands, combs, brushes
- Reusable water bottles and shopping bags
- Spare change
- Basic kitchen utensils
- Noodles and a pan
Sell & Donate
One of the most significant and most time-consuming things will be the things that you aren’t going to take with you. You’ll need to arrange to sell them well in advance. Use online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, Freecycle (if you want to give things away), and Craigslist.
Bag up everything that you want to donate and give it to your chosen charity as soon as you can, rather than have bags of clothing in your boots.
Something that can take a while to set up at the new place is the electrics. Which plugs and cables go where? Take a photo of each set of wires and grab a label maker to have the right labels on the cables too. You can put them in the right box, and still end up with a confusing snake-like tangle of cables.
As soon as you have decided that you are moving, start the process. Even if you haven’t found a property yet, you should make sure that you give yourself the best start possible, and often that will mean you have already started packing, selling, labeling, and donating. The bigger your house, the longer you are going to need it. Most people really underestimate how much they really have too.
